Carvers "Boxes" Something is Not RightHave you ever had that eerie looking at in the back of your listen thatsomething just is not right? It is as if there is some unknown reason that asituation has a different baseborning then what is obvious. This feeling is thedisguised backbone of Raymond Carvers figment, "Boxes". In this story the sonseems to be experiencing this feeling as his mother decides to move again.There are gaps in the story melody which shows that the sons dialog does notmatch up with his thoughts throughout the situation. These gaps highlight ahidden theme that associates the sons feelings about his mother moving with herdeath.One of the reasons the son unconsciously believes he will never see hismother again, is because his mother mentions more than once in the story thatshe would like to die. These gaps in the story where the mother mentions endin the same scenes that have to do with her moving associates her moving withher death. One instance that she mentions destruction is where she is complainingabout the weather in Longview "I mean it, honey. I dont want to see thisplace again except from my coffin. I hate this g.d. place. I dont know why Imoved here. I indirect request I could just die and get it over with" (p. 413). I do notthink the son believes she really wants to die but she puts the idea of herdying in his subconscious. There is a gap at that calculate that is up to thereader to figure out. The gap is widened farther in that same scene. The sonremembers intellection about a man working on a power line. The man leaned outsupported only by a safety rap and the son thought about if the man fell. Theson is still on the phone with his mother "I didnt have any idea what I was press release to say next. I had to say something. But I was filled with unworthyfeelings, thoughts no son should admit to. Youre my mother, I said finally.What can I do to help?" (p. 413). What were these thoughts? Why does nt thenarrator tell us? The son cannot help being affected by these powerful words ofhis mother. This gap in the story is important because the son is thinkingabout how that man working on the pole could easily die if his safety belt doesnot hold. At this point he also has unmentionable thoughts about his mother.
