Thomas Hobbes is increasingly being recognized as the idea who, more than any other, broke with traditional Christian governmental theology and laid the foundations of the more secular form of governmental philosophy that has shaped the outlook on religion and governing at the heart of the modern West. Although that outlook still prevails, it has come in under great pressure and challenge in young years, both from within the West itself and from critics and opponents outside the West. In these circumstances, it is non surprising that political theorists, historians, and others are beginning to reexamine the grow of modern secularism. In the words of Mark Lilla, an intellectual historian whose concern with the fragile state of modern secularism led him choke off to Hobbes, the way modern liberal democracies approach religion and political science today is unimaginable without the decisive break made by Thomas Hobbes (Lilla 2007, 88). Hobbes was not a liberal thinker in all respects, and he was indisputablely no democrat; yet, as Lilla argues, he established the theoretical foundations of the modern state, understood as a state directed to secular ends, with its authority derived from mankind sources.
