In Herman Melvilles Moby dig, Ishmael is ignorant of white sharkism, Ramadan, and Paganism, solely of which his new bedfellow, Queequeg, participates in. When people are ignorant, they start to get terrified, and tend to fear things they arent cogniseledgeable about. For instance, Ishmael is scared of Queequeg when he first sees him. He is also frightened by Captain Ahab who seems to be the outcast of the ship since his encounter with Moby Dick that left him with a stump for a leg. Starbuck fears that the whole travel will turn out badly. And Ahab fears his own madness.
Upon their first meeting, Queequeg instills fear in Ishmael because not only is this stranger dismission to be his new bedfellow but he is a irreligious cannibal with teeth sharpened to points, tattoos covering the entirety of his body, including his face, he carries around and sells shrunken heads, and he never goes anywhere without his cut/peace pipe. Ishmael does not know Queequeg personally, therefore he is afraid.



Although, Ishmael has every right to fear the pagan cannibal he merely passes judgments before he even speaks to Queequeg. only once they share a bed, Ishmaels first impression of Queequeg changes. Queequeg may look like a rough, tough, scary guy on the outside, but despite being a cannibal he still acts like a educate human being most of the time. Once Ishmael gets to know Queequeg, he no longer fears him.
Now unlike Ishmael, Starbuck, the first mate, knows Ahab personally. Starbuck also knows that after Ahab endured the pain of losing his leg he may very well not be in his right mind anymore.
