Many see the idea of transitioning into the adult humankind as an incredibly exciting adventure while others dread the closing off of the security their childhood provided. In the story The Glass Roses, Alden Nowlan places 15 year-old Stephen among those who may have drowned in the expectations of adulthood of no wizard had been there to pull him out of the water and provide pleader; this is what Leka did. Initially, the author described Stephen whole as a willowy fifteen-year old who had convinced himself that he would never become a domain. However, he met Leka and discovered that the perception of what it meant to be a man was to each its own. Consequently, he realized that he was not the only individual unlike his catch and that he had the choice of escaping the closing off he provided. Being different from those surrounding an individual may lead to one feeling mentally and physically isolate from society.

Initially, Stephen felt up completely alone in the struggle of fit a man by his fathers demanding guidelines, until h met Leka and realized the world he lived in was only as small as his fathers mind. Judging by what surrounded him, Stephen perceived the im long time of his father to be that of a real man (as most boys his age do).



He was once warned by his father, You got to start actin like a man if you want to hold down a mans job. This brought Stephen even off further into isolation and doubt as he felt that by being different, he was disappointing his father. Pret decisioning to be someone unlike his real self, Stephen hoped to come closer to the closed-off classify of working men. The more he observed the easy military posture of these men, the oftener he worked himself into  aching exhaustion at the end of a pulp saw... is the way he describes his determination. Despite his will, he knew that this was only an attempt to lessen the growing gap amidst him and his father; between his ideals and those the world had set out for him.
